An ophthalmic assistant and research assistant holding two concurrent positions in North Carolina, Donnie Rhett Koonce has a track record of dedicated service. This began during Donnie Rhett Koonce’s high school career at South Mecklenburg High School. As president of the National Society of Black Engineers, he created a drive that brought in more than 300 toiletry bags and books for children at the local elementary school who lived in poverty. This commitment to service continued during Mr. Koonce’s time as an anthropology undergraduate at UNC-Charlotte and master’s student at Wake Forest University. While earning his degrees, he conducted glaucoma screenings for low-income patients, mentored low-income minority students, and conducted research relating to the barriers to health care that low-income and minority populations face.

Mr. Koonce currently works as an ophthalmic assistant at Charlotte Eye, Ear, Nose, and Throat, PA, and also has responsibilities as an ophthalmic technician at Charlotte Optometric Clinic. In his free time, he enjoys various creative hobbies, including cooking and music. He is fond of creating new recipes as a cook, and is skilled in playing both the drums and piano. He also enjoys playing basketball, reading, and mentoring minority males.
